If you are planning a day of sunbathing,

If you are planning a day of sunbathing, listen up.

That bottle of sunscreen you think is protecting you from harmful ultraviolet rays, may not be doing an effective job.

Tests performed by the Environmental Working Group, or E-W-G, found that four out of five brand-name sunscreens don’t adequately protect consumers. The E-W-G tested nearly a thousand well known sunscreen products and developed a ratings system which factored in: U-V-A protection,

product stability, and potential health hazards of the product’s ingredients.  Four out of five sunscreens tested either failed to provide enough protection or posed an excessive health risk due to harmful chemicals in the product.

Some of the leading brands scored the worst: None of Coppertone’s forty-one sunscreen products met the study criteria for safety and efficacy. Neutrogena and Banana Boat didn’t do so well either.

The top five sunscreens:

*Keys Soap Solar Therapeutic (SPF 30)
*Rukid Sunny Days Facestick Mineral Sunscreen
*California Baby Sunblock Stick Everyday – (SPF 30)
*California Baby Sunblock Stick No Fragrance (SPF 30)
*Badger Sunscreen (SPF 30)
Sunscreen is most effective when applied a half-hour before going out in the sun. You should reapply at least every two hours. Just to be safe, wear a hat and cover up with light clothing.
